Gerard Piqué Calls The MLS "An Attractive Option"

In an interview with Marca week, Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué spoke with reporters about the growing soccer culture in the United States, and the interest its growth has begun to draw from players across the globe.

“I read that the MLS is the seventh biggest league in terms of stadium attendances, fans are increasingly hooked on soccer in the United States and it would be an attractive option in a few years," Pique said.

Although he made it clear that the move would take place after his playing career at Barcelona has ended, when he does want to continue to play at a high level it appears that a career in the MLS is in his sights.

“I’ve always said I would retire at Barca, but it would be an attractive option in a few years,” Pique said.

After spending all but one of his nine professional seasons with Barcelona, it would be tough for any league to pull the defender away from the club with whom he became a three time champions league winner. However, as he gets older and it becomes tougher and tougher for him to compete on the world stage, the Spanish native may find refuge in the country where many of his former competitors have come to play.

If the MLS does eventually pull Piqué away from his home, he will be the best defender to join the league since Nesta crossed the pond in 2012.
