The CONCACAF Gold Cup Quarterfinal Match-Ups, Explained

The CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal match-ups are set. Only eight teams remain. Let's check them out:

July 19: Costa Rica vs. Panama

Time: 6:00 p.m. EST

Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

TV: FOX Sports 1, Univision

Match-up: Costa Rica finished first in Group A, and Panama finished second in Group B. Costa Rica thrives on an organized defense and the creativity of Benfica midfielder Bryan Ruiz on offense. Panama's top players include Porto forward Ismail Diaz and NYCFC midfielder Miguel Camargo.

July 19: United States vs. El Salvador

Time: 9:00 p.m. EST

Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

TV: FOX Sports 1, Univision

Match-up: El Salvador finished third in Group C, and the USA finished first in Group B. The USMNT that will face El Salvador is will be totally different from the group stage version. El Salvador will have to contend with new arrivals Jozy Altidore, Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley and Darlington Nagbe, as well as holdovers Kellyn Acosta, Dax McCarty and Jordan Morris. El Salvador are dangerous, though, particularly Nelson Bonilla and Rodolfo Zelaya.

 

July 20: Jamaica vs. Canada

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Location: Phoenix, Arizona

TV: FOX Sports 1, Univision

Match-up: Canada finished second in Group A and Jamaica finished second in Group B. Canada have called up Orlando City star striker Cyle Larin, who will partner with 16-year-old Vancouver Whitecaps wonderkind Alphonso Davies. Jamaica, for their part, will lean on Darren Matticks and Je-Vaughn Watson.

July 20: Mexico vs. Honduras

Time: 10:30 p.m. EST

Location: Phoenix, Arizona

TV: FOX Sports 1, Univision

Match-up: Mexico finished first in Group C and Honduras finished third in Group A. Mexico are probably the favorites in this tournament, with a strike force boasting the likes of Elias Hernandez, Cubo Torres, Orbelin Pineda and Rodolfo Pizarro. Honduras have not actually scored in the tournament thus far, their only win came by forfeit against French Guiana. They have only allowed one goal, though, against Costa Rica.
