An incredible Tanner Tessmann Europa League goal proved to be the winner during Lyon’s opening game in the competition vs. FC Utrecht. It was a spectacular strike from the American midfielder.
The 24-year-old came off the bench for Lyon in the 65th minute and had an immediate impact with a fantastic goal 10 minutes later.

Tessmann, who is the godson of Clemson football head coach Dabo Swinney, might’ve been a professional kicker in another life. The USMNT midfielder originally committed to Clemson to be the kicker for the football team, but instead chose to play soccer professionally with FC Dallas in 2020.
Tessmann essentially did a reverse Brandon Aubery. If anyone understands that reference, kudos to you.
USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino hasn’t played Tessmann in a game for the U.S. since the Concacaf Nations League disaster against Panama and Canada back in March. Perhaps this goal will earn the head coach’s attention and get Tessmann back in the picture for the October roster.
Tessmann has played the full 90 minutes in every Ligue 1 game for Lyon so far this season as the French club have won five of their opening six games across all competitions.
