HISTORY: Tim Weah becomes first American to score UCL goal at Santiago Bernabéu

A Tim Weah goal vs Real Madrid made history on Tuesday as the Marseille forward became the first American to score a Champions League goal at the Santiago Bernabéu. Real Madrid went on to win the game 2-1.

Weah opened the scoring in the 22nd minute for the French club following a quick counter attack. Real Madrid were dispossessed near midfield and Mason Greenwood found Weah for the goal.

Weah becomes the second-ever United States men’s national team player to score against Real Madrid in the Champions League. Christian Pulisic did so during Chelsea’s title-winning run in 2021, however that game was played at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium.

Unfortunately for Weah and Marseille a famous result wasn’t meant to be. Kylian Mbappé went on to score twice from the penalty spot to grab all three points for Real Madrid.

While the result won’t be what Weah hoped for, his performance is a great sign for things to come. The 25-year-old didn’t have the most impressive game with the USMNT during their 2-0 defeat to South Korea earlier this month. He also failed to score or assist in Marseille’s first four games of the season.

His second career Champions League goal should be a major confidence boost for the American at his new club. Weah left Juventus following the Club World Cup in search of more minutes with Marseille.

Weah will get another shot at one of the big boys in Europe this weekend when Marseille host Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday in Ligue 1.
