VENICE - AS Roma’s slump continued with a 3-2 Serie A defeat by lowly Venezia on Sunday, as the hosts recovered from surrendering the lead before halftime to launch a sensational second half fightback.

José Mourinho’s side have one win in their last seven games in all competitions and have dropped out of the top four after picking up four points from their last five league games.

“This is not the year to dream big, but it is up to me to raise the ambition and motivation. Our goal is fourth place, but for some reason we have slid to sixth," Mourinho told DAZN.

Fort Worth native Bryan Reynolds made his first career start for AS Roma on Thursday. It wasn’t a match to remember. 

Reynolds, a right back who moved to Italy from FC Dallas over the summer, was part of the worst defensive performance in José Mourinho’s 1,008-match career in a stunning 6-1 defeat to Bodø/Glimt in the Europa Conference League. Never before had Mourinho, a man often accused of playing boring, defensive football, allowed six goals in a match.

I can’t tell if José Mourinho is trolling Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka, trying to encourage him to do the right thing or both, but the Mourinho Xhaka comment on Instagram has brought something to my attention I did not expect.

Xhaka tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of the international break, keeping the midfielder out of his Switzerland’s friendly with Greece on Wednesday and putting his availability for World Cup qualifiers against Italy and Northern Ireland into doubt. 

José Mourinho is known for many things. Fielding teams which produce energetic, flowing, attacking displays is not one of them.

AS Roma has named José Mourinho as its new head coach on a three-year contract, the Italian Serie A club announced on Tuesday, 15 days after the Portuguese was sacked as manager of Tottenham Hotspur.

The 58-year-old will replace Paulo Fonseca for the start of next season, who Roma announced earlier on Tuesday would leave the club at the end of the current campaign.

In a dressing room like Tottenham's, it's not enough to have the stars on your side. The kind farewells to José Mourinho from Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, Spurs' two best players, don’t mean much if the rest of the squad doesn't follow their example. 

José Mourinho, according to The Times on Wednesday, could have been sentenced by the fears of the board, led by Daniel Levy, that the Portuguese had lost control of the dressing room, and thus compromised the short-term objectives: the Carabao Cup final and the qualification to European competitions next season.
