Announcers Are Amusingly Slow To React To This Superb Goal

Announcers can bring a lot to a sporting event, providing insightful commentary or added excitement. They can also detract from a game, as anyone who has ever tried to watch a basketball game with Bill Walton as the color commentator can attest to. The announcers for the I-League match between Minerva Punjab and Mohun Bagan fall into the latter category for the magnificent goal late in the match by Kingsley Obumneme.

Minerva, scored a 2-1 victory on Wednesday over Mohun Bagan, which is, in fact, not the name of a hobbit. Late in the match, with a 2-0 lead, Minerva’s midfield failed to close down Obumneme and the center back launched a swerving, long-range effort that found its way into the back of the net in the 94th minute.

The goal was mere consolation for Bagan, but the announcers were a bit slow to react.

“And he scores a goal.”

A moment later.

“WHAT A GOAL BY KINGSLEY COMAN!!!”

Note: Kingsley Coman is a French winger who plays for Bayern Munich, not Bagan. Eze Kingsley Obumneme is the man who scored this goal, a Nigerian defender who has spent most of his career in India.

Despite the Kingsley goal vs Minerva, Punjab went to the top of the I-League standings thanks to two goals from Chencho Gyeltshen, a Bhutan international. The 21-year-old is his country’s all-time leading goal scorer with 10 and is known as the Ronaldo of Bhutan, which is a bit like saying I’m the William Shakespeare of my cubicle.
