Looking Ahead To The 150th Revierderby

Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04 will meet once again in the Revierderby Saturday. They last met in a nil-nil draw on October 29, 2016.

This will be the 150th iteration of the derby. Schalke leads the all-time series with 58 wins to Borussia Dortmund's 51. They have drawn 40 times.

The first match between the two teams took place on May 3, 1925, with Schalke winning 4-2. Schalke won all three matchups against Dortmund that season.

Schalke's derby dominance continued in the Gauliga Era, with 14 victories, one draw, and one loss. Schalke were known as a powerhouse in this era, winning six German championships and one German Cup.

On November 14, 1943 as August Lenz scored to give Dortmund their first ever victory over Schalke.

In the aftermath of World War 2, Dortmund battled Schalke only once, for the Westphalia championship. Dortmund won, 3-2.

From 1947 to 1963, Dortmund won three Oberliga (the precurser to the Bundesliga) championships, and won nine of the first 13 Revierderbies of the Oberliga era. Dortmund would finish the Oberliga era with an overall record of 15 wins, 10 draws, and 7 losses against Schalke.

In the current Bundesliga and German Cup era that began in 1963 and ran until 2012, the competition has evened up quite a bit. However, Dortmund held a slight advantage by winning 27 Revierderbies, losing 25 and drawing 21.

This season, Borussia  Dortmund is one of the top three teams in the Bundesliga, while Schalke is in the middle of the pack. From the outside looking in, it looks like this contest could be in Dortmund's favor, but the past  tells a different story.
