Christina Gibbons Retires From Sky Blue FC At Age 24 — Could Sky Blue Be Next?

It is never easy to hang up your cleats and call it quits. But on January 12, 2019, Sky Blue FC defender Christina Gibbons announced her retirement from the NWSL.

At a young age of 24, Gibbons' short-lived career came to an end with her playing in 18 matches, starting in 16 of them.

Prior to her professional appearances, she had a successful collegiate career at Duke University and she was then drafted fifth overall by FC Kansas City in the 2017 NWSL College Draft. In between her trade to Sky Blue in 2018, she also competed for Melbourne Victory in Australia’s W-League.

Although her two-year professional soccer career has come to an end, she is not the only one to leave the Sky Blue this week. Gibbons was the fourth member of the 2018 squad to depart due to trades and the apparent poor management of the team on and off the field. Sky Blue is the longest-operating women’s professional soccer club in the U.S., but it is only a matter of time until they are forced into their retirement.

The fact that Gibbons gave up every female soccer player's dream at such a young age makes you wonder how bad conditions actually are under Sky Blue. Despite her reasoning to remove herself from a harsh environment, she went out with only positive vibes in her retirement announcement.
