Everton Breaks Bank, Puts It Back Together, Breaks It Again

When it comes to spending money, one would do well to follow the advice from the Carl Sagan-written movie Contact.

“First rule in government spending: Why build one when you can have two at twice the price?”

Everton converted that rule to the transfer market on Thursday when they spent a club-record $38.3 million on goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and then added midfielder Davy Klaassen later in the day for a cool $30 million.

Pickford, 23, comes to the blue half of Merseyside from Sunderland and became the third most expensive goalkeeper ever. Yes, only Gianluigi Buffon and Manchester City’s Ederson have cost more than this young Brit.

Klaassen is a smidge older than Pickford, but at 24 he’s already captained Ajax to the Europa League final.

A Netherlands national team starter, Klaassen scored 49 goals in 163 matches since making his Ajax first-team debut in 2011.

Everton finished seventh in the league last season, about on par with their average over the last decade but better than the 11th-place finishes from the two seasons prior.

With these signings they’ll hope to break back into Europe and, more importantly, beat Liverpool.
