Remember those late June whispers regarding a sophomore slump for Toronto FC’s Sebastian Giovinco? Yeah, suggestions of Giovinco’s apparent demise had been greatly exaggerated. The Italian registered his MLS-leading 16th goal on Saturday — it was his eighth goal in six MLS matches dating back to July 24th.
The play of Giovinco, and the return to fitness of Jozy Altidore, has been instrumental in Toronto’s climb up the Eastern Conference standings. They’re now only a single point behind New York City FC in the race for the top spot.
On Sunday, Toronto blitzed the Union for three first-half goals, effectively earning three vital road points before the first 45 minutes had even ended.
Giovinco’s 18th minute opener was sensational. Altidore’s hold-up play was dominant and Marky Delgado’s through ball sent the Atomic Ant in on goal.
Giovinco’s first touch was brilliant, using his heel to flick the ball into his path. It was the kind of understated brilliance that MLS spectators have been spoiled by for almost two years now.
His finish was the definition of cool, a double post strike that’s certainly easy on the eye.
Philadelphia answered through Ken Tribbett, but further Toronto goals by Drew Moor and Altidore ensured a TFC victory. Altidore’s goal was his fourth in five matches and it was a phenomenal display of strength and determination from the American striker.
Toronto FC are peaking at exactly the right moment. With Colorado beginning to struggle in the Western Conference, a late run for the Supporters’ Shield isn’t beyond question.
