One To Make You Feel Old: Ian Wright’s Grandson Scores Brilliant Solo Goal In FA Youth Cup

It really shouldn’t be any surprise D'Margio Wright-Phillips is turning into a great footballer. Just look at his family.

His father, Shaun Wright-Phillips, was a 13-year veteran of the English Premier League, winning the league with Chelsea in 2006 to go with 36 England caps. His uncle, Bradley Wright-Phillips, followed a career in England by scoring more than 100 goals with New York Red Bulls before joining LAFC in 2020. His granddaddy, Ian Wright, is Arsenal’s second-best all-time goal scorer and a Premier League winner in 1998.

D'Margio Wright-Phillips has plenty to live up to, but he’s off to a fine start.

The 18-year-old winger is on the books at Manchester City but currently on loan at Blackburn. Playing in the FA Youth Cup, Wright-Phillips had a goal and an assist in a 4-1 victory over Arsenal on Friday at Ewood Park.

Wright-Phillips’ goal, coming in the 54th minute, was an impressive solo effort. Even better was the teenager’s celebration, looking more like Simone Biles than Ian Wright.

Wright-Phillips later set up a goal by Sam Burns, who benefited from DWP’s cross deflecting right to him.

With the win, D'Margio Wright-Phillips, who has played for the England U-16s, and his Blackburn teammates advanced to the semifinals of the FA Youth Cup.
