Forgotten Golden Boy Guus Til Returns To Holland In Bid To Revive Career

Former AZ Alkmaar golden boy Guus Til has secured a return to the Netherlands after agreeing a loan move to Feyenoord.

The attacking midfielder was linked with several clubs across the continent after his exploits with AZ, where he scored 28 goals and assisted 12 more in 96 appearances. He eventually made a somewhat surprising decision to move to Russia, signing with Spartak Moscow in a $22 million move. Til struggled to show his true potential in the Russian capital though, making just 24 appearances for a total of 1,195 minutes.

After arriving as Spartak's record transfer, he scored two goals and provided three assists. The ex-AZ captain grabbed an opportunity to move to the Bundesliga last season with Freiburg, which signed Til on a one-year loan with an option for a further year. There was also reported interest at the time from PSV and Rangers as well as Feyenoord, which has now got its man a year on. The midfielder spoke of how he felt the Bundesliga suited him best, but endured another difficult season in the Black Forest region.

He clocked up just over 400 minutes of playing time in Germany — 120 in the Bundesliga and 309 in the fourth tier with Freiburg's reserve side.

Til is now looking to put a nightmare two-year spell behind him with a year-long move to Feyenoord. With an opportunity for consistent playing time, Til could again show the talent that saw him become such a hot property two years ago. Things have not gone according to plan recently, but Feyenoord could be the perfect place for him to regain form and confidence. The 23-year-old is one to keep an eye on in the upcoming season.
