Jason Sudeikis talks Ted Lasso series finale and possible spinoffs

Back in August of 2013, NBC Sports got American viewers fired up for the 2013-14 Premier League season with a surreal piece of absurdist humor that landed well: Jason Sudeikis as the manager of Tottenham Hotspur in the "An American Coach in London" ad.

It's still entirely unbelievable that 10 years later that character has spawned a comedy-drama TV series thats first season received 20 nominations at the 73rd Emmy Awards before its second season earned 20 nominations at the 74th Emmy Awards.

Ted Lasso shocked us all by doing everything right, so maybe it shouldn't surprise us that Ted Lasso is also doing the right thing by sticking to its planned storytelling arch of three seasons.

Sudeikis, who not only stars but also serves as co-creator, co-writer and executive producer, has always expressed his desire for three seasons, and during a recent discussion with Deadline Hollywood he reaffirmed that thought process.

“This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell, that we were hoping to tell, that we loved to tell," Sudeikis said. "The fact that folks will want more and are curious beyond more than what they don’t even know yet — that being Season 3 — it’s flattering. Maybe by May 31, once all 12 episodes of the season (have been released), they’re like, ‘Man, you know what, we get it, we’re fine. We don’t need anymore, we got it.’ But until that time comes, I will appreciate the curiosity beyond what we’ve come up with so far.”

However, with all the beloved characters the show has introduced, Sudeikis isn't so quick to dismiss the possibility of a Ted Lasso spinoff.

“Yeah, I think that we’ve set the table for all sorts of folks to get to watch the further telling of these stories,” he said. “Again, I can’t help but take the question as flattery for what all of us that were working on the show have tried to do. It’s really kind of folks to even consider that because you never know what’s gonna happen when you make things. The fact that people want more, even if it’s a different avenue is lovely.”

Ted Lasso Season 3 premiers on Wednesday, March 15, on Apple TV+. New episodes will debut each Wednesday with the 12-episode series running until May 31.
