He Knew Ronaldo Wanted To Face Benfica, So He Made Fun Of Knocking Them Out

Pep Guardiola has hopped on the banter bus after his Bayern Munich side defeated SL Benfica in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Cristiano Ronaldo had previously said that he would love to play Benfica in the semi-finals of the Champions League. Ronaldo is Portuguese and Benfica is based in the capital city of Portugal, Lisbon. Clearly, playing in Lisbon for Real Madrid against Benfica would have been a glorious moment for Ronaldo.

Guardiola, having heard of Ronaldo’s desire, jokingly apologized to Ronaldo for knocking Benfica out of the Champions League

"I know that Cristiano would have liked Benfica in the semi-finals, I am sorry for him.”

Of course, Guardiola followed this up with a serious admission of understanding, and a line of certified coach speak.

"It's normal that Ronaldo would have wanted to play Benfica as he is Portuguese.”

“Manchester City are a possibility, so are Real [Madrid] and Atletico.”

"We are happy to be here and will play anyone."

Thrilling stuff, Pep. For a second there, we thought you were about to put Ronaldo on blast for wanting to face the second weakest side left in the Champions League, better only than the side that Ronaldo and Madrid just defeated, Wolfsburg.

Missed opportunity, Pep, and you’re usually so prepared.
