Why You Should Watch Spain’s Women’s League

Spain’s LaLiga has some of the biggest names in football like Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Sergio Ramos. But Spain’s other league you may not be watching is certainly worth your time.

The Primera Division is Spain’s highest level of competition for women’s football. It consists of 18 teams who all compete for the league title, as well as for two spots in the UEFA Women’s Champion League.

The Primera Division is regarded as one of Europe’s top leagues, if not the best. Current champion Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao share the top spot for winningest clubs in league history each with five titles.

Spain’s Jennifer Hermoso has been the top goalscorer of the league four of the last five seasons. She accomplished the feat three times with Barcelona and once with Atletico Madrid. Hermoso's highest goal total for the season was 35. However, the record for most goals in a season is 39. Veronica Boquete accomplished this feat that still stands today in the 2010-11 season.

The only non-Spanish footballer to lead the season in goals was Charlyn Corral, who hails from Mexico. She was the leading scorer in 2017 with 24 goals for Levante.

The level of competition is quite extraordinary to watch and is regarded as one of the top women’s leagues in football.

The Real Madrid women’s team made its debut this year. They were originally founded as Club Deportivo Tacon but they were branded in 2019 and made their debut this season.

During the transition period, Real Madrid made a splash in the signing period, signing the Swedish pair of Sofia Jakobsson and Kosovare Asllani, while also signing the Brazilian Thaisa.

Plenty of goals go around also, with each match averaging 3.05 goals a match. A total of 464 goals were scored in 152 matches played last year. Any football fan surely enjoys a parade of goals.

Ten different players also had hat tricks, and two players reached a total of 20 goals. The longest unbeaten run was 21 matches by Barcelona; 21 matches were also the longest winless run by Espanyol.

Barcelona absolutely steamrolled its competition, finishing the season undefeated and with an insane +80 goal difference. Barcelona was led by its top two goalscorers, Hermoso and Nigeria's Asisat Oshoala. They won 19 matches and drew two. Unfortunately for their counterparts in Barcelona, Espanyol finished the season winless.

This season although early has proven to be more competitive. Currently Atletico Madrid leads the league, although with two more matches played than Barcelona. Madrid has 14 points, after them comes Granadilla in second and Barcelona behind that.

Teams play 30 matches so it is still quite early, you might want to tune in before it is too late.
