Is Sergio Busquets On His Way To Old Trafford?

Manchester United are probably the most widely known club in soccer and were quite dominant on the pitch under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson. As of recently it’s been quite the opposite.

They have struggled throughout the current season just to barely secure a Europa league spot. Spending millions to bring in top talent in hopes of getting back on their pedestal as a force to be reckoned with, but always falling short of expectations.

While United have a team full of amazing players, they are still missing the key to any successful team. United need that player who can control the tempo of a game and really orchestrate an attack as well as shut down the opposition on defense without batting an eye.

If you image search that last sentence a player by the name of Sergio Busquets will show up. You may have heard of him, he’s pretty good.

Sergio Busquets is the gear that drives the clocks known as FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team. Busquets makes the transition from defense to attack seamless and almost nonexistent, and there are very few players who are capable of this. He has won every trophy at club and international level and is currently part of one of the best Barcelona teams in recent years.

2019 is when the Spanish midfielder’s current deal runs out at the Camp Nou, and while Barcelona are trying to negotiate a new deal, Busquets has rejected the offer(s) presented to him by the club. Manchester United are reportedly ready to pounce on the midfielder.

If a deal went through and Busquets was to go to Manchester, he would be surrounded with talent young and old. He will be joined by fellow Spanish NT players David De Gea, Juan Mata and Ander Herrera as well as German powerhouse Bastian Schweinsteiger and, of course, last but not least, Wayne Rooney.

The opposition will also be a test for Busquets. While there is competition in Spain, the style of play, speed of the game and level of competition are very different in England and could take Busquets some time to get used to.

The big question is, what would it take to get Busquets out of his home country and away from the club he has been a part of for so long? The Barcelona maestro has stated that his wife and former coach Pep Guardiola would be the only things to alter his view of staying at Barcelona, but what about money? United are ready to offer Busquets £200,000 per week which is a big jump from his current £120,000 a week at Barcelona and could tempt him to leave if Barcelona won’t meet those terms.

A lot of factors go into this transfer happening and more times than not when that’s the case they don’t go through.

A big factor besides the money, the player and the club is the manager. Manchester United’s current manager is under fire for not doing much but spending in his time there so far, rumors are that Jose Mourinho is on the brink of taking over at Old Trafford and that alone would be enough to bring this transfer rumor to an end.

Mourinho is former manager of Barcelona rival Real Madrid and Busquets has had his fair share of exchanges with him and would never consider working for him.

50/50 is the chance that this transfer goes through. If Barcelona can match or beat Busquets personal terms and/or any other team’s offer, than I predict he stays. Of course if they can’t match or beat his terms than Busquets has every right to leave it’s just a matter of where he goes. Manchester United isn’t the only club after him but that’s a topic best saved for another article.
