Porto Goalkeeper Is The Saddest Man In Football Chasing Firmino’s Slow-Rolling Shot In Vain

If you’re like most of the football world on Tuesday, you were focused on the battle between the world’s two richest sides, PSG and Manchester City. As sad as Bernardo Silva was after his miss in that match, there was no one sadder on Tuesday than Diogo Costa, the Porto goalkeeper who was caught disastrously out of position by Roberto Firmino.

Liverpool crushed Porto 5-1 at the Estádio do Dragão, with Mohamed Salah and Firmino each scoring twice and Sadio Mané hitting an easy tap in. It was an impressively dominating performance for Jürgen Klopp’s men, especially coming off a 3-3 draw with Brentford on the weekend.

The win was rarely in doubt in the second half, but Porto didn’t give up, pulling one back through Mehdi Taremi. This is a side that plays with no fear; remember, Porto knocked Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus out of the Champions League in the Round of 16 last season.

But Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa was perhaps a bit too fearless in the 77th minute. Three minutes after Taremi made it a two-goal game, Costa made a baffling decision to race off his line to go for a ball he was third-favorite at best to reach. Firmino cleverly took control of the ball and then shot the slowest 35-yard goal you’ll ever see.

Costa desperately raced back to keep the shot out but his dive came a fraction too late as the ball cross the line and the rout was back on.

The only thing worse than making a boneheaded mistake is thinking you can make up for it only to come up just short.

It’s the hope that kills you.

Firmino added one more goal four minutes later to make it 5-1 as the Reds took control of Group B. Liverpool tops the group with six points, two ahead of Atlético Madrid, which used a late Luis Suárez penalty to down 10-man AC Milan 2-1 on Tuesday. Porto is in third while Milan remains bottom with no points.

Here are the full-match highlights, including some extra angles of Diogo Costa’s questionable efforts.
