Matt Turner’s poor form this season a major concern for USMNT during Copa América

Nottingham Forest nearly secured a big point at home against Arsenal however a costly Matt Turner mistake at his near post saw the Gunners win 2-1 on Tuesday.

The latest Matt Turner mistake featured the United States men’s national team goalkeeper conceding a goal between his legs. Turner’s errors are cause for concern among the USMNT faithful.

In the 65th minute with the score tied 0-0 Gabriel Jesus was in on Forest’s goal but at a tight angle. What should have been a standard save instead turned into disaster for Turner as it went right through the wickets.

If this was the only mistake Turner had made all season, then there’d be no reason to write this story as mistakes happen. Unfortunately for the 29-year-old mistakes have been occurring at far too high of a rate in his first season with Nottingham Forest.

Here are some of the other Turner troubles that have happened this season.

The blooper against Liverpool saw Turner benched for five games before re-earning the starting job.

It’s never a good sign when the national team’s No. 1 goalkeeper is struggling this much. In 17 Premier League starts Turner has conceded 28 goals.

The 2024 Copa America is only five months away and as things stand Turner has no challengers for the USMNT’s goalkeeping job.

Ethan Horvath sits in Nottingham Forest’s reserves and hasn’t played in a game for a club since May. Meanwhile Zack Steffen has transferred to the Colorado Rapids to try and jumpstart his career.

Longshots like Drake Callender and Gaga Slonina aren’t likely to leapfrog Turner.

In fairness to Turner, he has a tendency to perform much better in a USMNT kit than he does in a Forest kit. If the same Turner that we saw in Qatar shows up at Copa America, then things might be alright.

The security of the USMNT’s goal this summer will all depend on which Turner the U.S. will get.
