Houston Dynamo issue apology to fans after surprise Lionel Messi absence

“No Messi, No Party" — every Houston Dynamo fan right now, probably.

Fans who bought tickets for Houston Dynamo’s hosting of Inter Miami — eager to see the appearance of Lionel Messi — were hit with devastating news on Saturday night after reports indicated that the Argentine was to miss the clash at Shell Energy Stadium this weekend.

Leading up to Sunday’s game, there were no indications that Messi wouldn’t make the trip to Texas with his Inter Miami teammates. However, on Saturday, multiple reports revealed that the Inter Miami captain superstar would remain in Florida as he was simply being rested following a hectic early-season schedule.

The news likely came as a shock to Houston fans, many of whom had spent hefty amounts for the chance to witness Messi in the flesh — with the cheapest ticket available as of Friday afternoon being well over $200.

Houston Dynamo issue apology to fans following Lionel Messi absence

In response, the Houston Dynamo issued an apology on Sunday morning, offering those fans who would be in attendance, compensation.

"The Houston Dynamo are excited to host Inter Miami CF at Shell Energy Stadium on Sunday evening. The recently shared player status report for the match did not include forward Lionel Messi, but it has been reported he did not make the trip to Houston. Unfortunately, we have no control over who plays for our opponent," the club said in a statement.

"We look forward to hosting everyone tomorrow for what will be an incredible atmosphere and celebration of soccer for the city of Houston. To show our appreciation, fans who attend tomorrow night’s match can claim a complimentary ticket to a future Dynamo match this season. Additional details will be provided early next week."

The same strange response dynamic happened in the 2024 MLS Season when thousands of traveling fans were outraged when not only Messi, but also Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets missed the clash against the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place last May.
