To maintain any chance of catching Bayern Munich and winning the Bundesliga title, third-place Leipzig needed to defeat 11th-place Hertha Berlin on Wednesday at Red Bull Arena.
Things started out poorly with Hertha’s Marko Grujić, on loan from Liverpool, opening the scoring in the ninth minute. However, Leipzig responded in the first half through Lukas Klostermann before the home side had Marcel Halstenberg sent off for a second yellow card in the 63rd minute.
Things looked bleak for Julian Nagelsmann’s side, but Hertha keeper Rune Jarstein offered them a lifeline in the 63rd minute when he swatted Patrik Schick’s meek effort straight back into his own goal.

Fortunately for Jarstein, his teammates would bail him out in the 82nd minute after Matheus Cunha earned a penalty that Krzysztof Piątek duly converted. Once again, the home side has failed to earn all three points in Germany.

The result sees Leipzig hold steady in third, trailing leaders Bayern by nine points with just six matches remaining. Hertha climbs up to 10th with the draw and moves 11 points clear of the relegation playoff position.
