De Gea has frequently been United’s best player, which tells you just how poor the team's been in recent years. The Spaniard has led by example at the back and has been a long-serving player. Since he signed with United in 2011, De Gea has been the club's player of the year four times. Because of these performances, he deserves, at the very least, a new and improved contract extension.
Manchester United has been working on this, and it looks likely that De Gea will be extending his stay at Old Trafford.

What he deserves in addition to a contract extension is the captaincy of the club. There's absolutely no reason why De Gea shouldn’t have the armband. He may have almost left for Real Madrid a few years ago, but it’s clear that De Gea still wants to play at Old Trafford. And can you blame him for asking the club for more money? He’s been United’s best player for quite some time.

Something that’s questionable is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to make Ashley Young captain of the side. While Young is a big presence in the locker room, his performances lately are not up to par as captain of Manchester United, period. Paul Pogba shouldn’t be captain either. But his price-tag, as well as his notoriety, should not be the deciding factor. Is Pogba a great player? Yes. Are his performances and attitude enough to take him to the leadership role? They shouldn’t be.
I’m not saying that club captaincy should be decided solely on performances in matches, because by that logic, De Gea probably wouldn’t have been captain last season. Still, De Gea is one of the most consistent performers for United and his ability to lead by example is one of his best traits. His loyalty to United shouldn’t be questioned anymore, and as one of the longer serving members of the team, he deserves to be leading Manchester United from the net.
