Craziest College Soccer Records Of All Time

College soccer is back in full swing so The18 has compiled some of the craziest college soccer records of all time

For both the men's and women's games, these college soccer records may never be broken.

Craziest College Soccer Records Ever

Men: Jeff Johnson, Kent State vs Miami (Ohio), Oct. 19, 1974 — 45 saves in a game

The defense certainly didn’t do its goalkeeper any favors this game. To put this number into perspective, the record for saves in a Premier League game is 14. Johnson had to make more than three times that many saves while playing goalkeeper for this match against Miami (Ohio).

Men: Chester Kowalewski, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, 1973 — .981 season save percentage

OK, this has to be one of the greatest goalkeeper records of all time. Chester Kowalewski saved an absolutely absurd 211 of the 215 shots that were taken over 14 games of the 1973 season, meaning that the man only allowed four goals over that 14 game span.

The record for saves in a season is 230 by Ray Migas at DePaul in 1987, so Kowalewski saved over 98 percent of shots on target while being shot on at a near record clip.

With a record like that its no surprise that Kowalewski found himself playing professionally a year later, as he was signed as a goalkeeper for the NASL team the Denver Dynamos. However, Kowalewski’s professional gig only lasted one year, so needless to say it didn’t go as well as he would’ve hoped.

Women: Anne Sherow, University of North Carolina, 1985-1988 — .143 goals against average

Sherow accomplished this record over the course of 28 games, meaning that she averaged one goal allowed every seven games she was playing keeper. She definitely had some serious defensive help though, as one season she only had to save the ball 35 times over 24 games, allowing only one goal.

Women: Holly Manthei, Notre Dame, 1994-1997 — 129 career assists

Averaging over an assist per game is impressive enough, but one only has to look at the rest of the leaderboard to see how dominant Manthei was throughout her Notre Dame career. The second-highest assist leader is Kerri Hanks, another Notre Dame player, who recorded 73 assists from 2005-2008.Yes, you read that correctly: Holly Manthei completed 52 more assists than the second highest assist maker of all time, and get this, she accomplished this feat while playing three fewer games than Hanks (Manthei: 100 games; Hanks: 103 games).

Manthei ended up having a stint with the USWNT, notching 21 caps over her career.

Men: Virginia Military Institute, Sept. 12, 2014, to Sept. 29, 2018 — 79 consecutive games without a win

This record is not one to be proud of.

The Virginia Military Institute went five full years without winning a game. That means there are some players who played at VMI and never won a game their entire time there. To make matters worse, of those 79 games, VMI only tied four of them and suffered a record-breaking 49 consecutive losses during five-year span.

Men: Avery Steinlage, Michigan State University, Oct. 15, 2008 to Sept. 20, 2009 — 1,318 consecutive shutout minutes

This guy played 14 straight games without letting a goal in, 'nuff said.

Men: Thompson Usiyan, Appalachian State, 1980 — 46 goals in a season

Usiyan’s record is definitely one that will never be broken, especially considering the fact that only one player in the past decade has come within 20 goals of the record (Andre Shiyanski, University of Denver, 28 goals).

Usiyan also has the record for most goals of all time with 109, putting him 19 goals ahead of the second-place goal scorer.

The reason Usiyan’s record is so safe is that high-scoring college players are typically offered professional contracts after one successful NCAA season, so not many elite players stay for the full four years anymore.

Women: Ashley Fortune, Francis Marion vs. Howard, Oct. 21, 2007 — 8 assists in one game

Ashley Fortune has more two more assists than any other women’s player in a single game. Fortune’s eight assists, plus the six she managed to complete over the rest of the season, were enough to make her the NCAA assist leader in 2007.

Men: Kendan Anderson, Valparaiso vs. IUPUI, Oct. 31, 2016 — Fastest hat trick (1:21)

Remember when Robert Lewandowski broke the record for the fastest hat trick in the Bundesliga in 3 minutes and 22 seconds? Imagine if he had done that in less than half the time.

To add insult to injury, IUPUI failed to register a single shot attempt during the match. Anderson scored two of the goals within 15 seconds.

Women: University of North Carolina, Oct. 12, 1990, to Sept. 30, 1994 — 92 consecutive wins

There’s dominance and then there is not losing a game for almost five straight years.

During this span the UNC women’s team, lead by U.S. soccer legend Mia Hamm, won four consecutive national championships, scoring 24 goals in those finals while only allowing two. UNC would go on to win all but two of the national championships in the 1990s.
