NFL Fans Should Fill The Offseason Void With Liga MX

NFL fans are down in the dumps right now. The Super Bowl came and went, and it was its normal gargantuan spectacle and it was a great game. But now what? Poor NFL fans have nothing to watch that fulfills their basic NFL fan needs. Basketball and baseball simply aren’t going to cut it, and nobody except for the players’ moms watches hockey anymore.

There is, technically, NFL related content out there, but the draft combine is about as exciting to watch as a movie with Scarlett Johanssen in which she’s wearing a burka the whole time. Well, we here at The18 have a suggestion for NFL fans: soccer. Wait, before you close that browser, hear us out. This is different. We’re not going to give you that “Americans love the best things so they should watch the EPL because it has the best players in the world” argument that’s been hashed and rehashed more times than that airplane food joke. No, NFL fans, don’t watch the EPL. It starts too early in the morning. We wouldn’t wish getting up at 4:30 in the morning on our worst enemies (who, coincidentally, based on the nature of this site, are likely NFL fans). And we don’t mean the MLS either. The MLS is, we are just going to come out and say it, as boring as when one of your friends tells you about his or her dream. It’s nearly unbearable. NFL fans are used to pizzaz, and there is one soccer league with more pizazz than all the rest: Liga MX.

Yeah, we said it. NFL fans should watch Liga MX to get them through the offseason. It will give them enough of a supply of insanity and violence to hold them over until the fall. That and more. Don’t believe us? Well, that’s fine. Read on, to find that the NFL and Liga MX are not as dissimilar as one might think.

What do NFL fans like about the NFL? We’ll start with the obvious: violence. No spectacle rivals that of very large men trying to hurt each other for our amusement. Mexican soccer provides this violence, albeit with smaller people, in spades. Liga MX’s players are all like those hyper-aggressive hothead bouncers who seem like they’re just a little too into their jobs; they’re just looking for a reason. Fortunately, there are 21 other players around who are only too happy to provide that reason.

Another thing NFL fans like about the NFL: the spectacle. Did you see Katy Perry’s halftime show? Nowhere else could that have happened. No soccer league does spectacle like Liga MX, and although they likely won’t be able to recruit Katy Perry anytime soon, Mexican teams still can put on a good show. For example, Queretaro had a halftime ceremony honoring Ronaldinho and he hadn’t even played a game yet. We don’t care how good he was when he was young, nowhere else but Mexico does anybody get that kind of treatment.

Our point is this: Liga MX contains all the elements folks enjoy about the NFL without actually being the NFL, and that’s as close as they’re going to get until the preseason starts in August. So why not watch Liga MX? It’ll be fun, we promise.
