USMNT win on the field but lose in the stands for Gold Cup opener vs. Trinidad and Tobago

The United States men’s national team dominated Trinidad and Tobago 5-0 in their Concacaf Gold Cup opener on Sunday, but do the people care?

Despite the home World Cup being just a year out, the USMNT’s draw appears to be at a low that hasn’t been seen in recent history. Sunday’s game was played at PayPal Park in San Jose, California, which has a capacity of 18,000. 

The venue was far from filled with a reported attendance of 12,610.

The scene at the stadium 10 minutes from kickoff was hard to believe.

With a chance to enter the CONCACAF Gold Cup on a positive note, the U.S. men's national team instead continued its slide with an embarrassing 4-0 loss to Switzerland in a friendly at Nashville on Tuesday.

The U.S. squad is missing most of its best players, but it now takes a four-match losing streak into its Gold Cup opener against Trinidad and Tobago in San Jose, Calif., on Sunday.

Lo’eau LaBonta could make history as oldest USWNT player to make her debut

United States women’s national team head coach Emma Hayes continues to surprise fans with her roster selections with the latest eyebrow raiser being a Lo’eau LaBonta USWNT call up for upcoming friendlies against China and Jamaica.

LaBonta, 32, could set a record as the oldest player to make her USWNT debut in the history of the program. The message from Hayes seems clear: If you’re playing well for your club, you will be in consideration for the national team regardless of age, prior appearances or other factors.

Galatasaray had plenty of fun with their 3-0 victory on Sunday clinching the league title and letting a Fernando Muslera penalty kick happen in the final minutes of the game.

The former Uruguay national team goalkeeper, who has been Galatasaray’s keeper since 2011, was the one to step up to the penalty spot in the closing act with his side leading 2-0.

Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso will leave his role at the end of the season, with the Spaniard saying on Friday the time was right after a fruitful three-year spell, as media reports link him to the Real Madrid job for next term.

Alonso took charge of Leverkusen in October 2022 and guided them to the double last season as they lifted their first Bundesliga title, without losing a game, while they also won the German Cup and reached the Europa League final.

For the first time since 2019 it appears that the United States men’s national team will send a full strength squad to the Concacaf Gold Cup.

FOX Soccer’s Doug McIntyre spoke with Alexi Lalas and reported that this summer’s Gold Cup will see the best U.S. players competing.

Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano was fuming about a controversial VAR decision during his side’s 1-0 loss to LAFC in the Concacaf Champions Cup on Wednesday. The Argentine said LAFC deserved a red card and that the moment in question is “a red in China and on the moon.”

LAFC were fortunate not to go a player down when forward Nathan Ordaz was caught up in an off-the-ball skirmish with Miami defender Maximiliano Falcón. In the first half Ordaz was seen striking Falcón.

Watch: José Mourinho grabs Galatasaray manager’s nose after Turkish Cup defeat

José Mourinho could be in big trouble after he was seen grabbing the opposing manager’s nose following Fenerbahce’s 2-1 defeat to Galatasaray in the Turkish Cup on Wednesday.

“The Special One” appeared to have a verbal dispute with Galatasaray boss Okan Buruk following the final whistle. Shortly after shaking hands with the referees, the two managers exchanged words.

Mourinho then followed Buruk and grabbed his nose. The 51-year-old Turkish manager then fell to the ground grabbing his face.
