Landon Donovan’s Club Forfeits Point Earned In Match Because Opponent Used Racial Slur

LA Galaxy II parted ways with defender Omar Ontiveros on Saturday, three days after he was found to have used a racial slur during a USL Championship game against the San Diego Loyal, which is coached by former USMNT star Landon Donovan.

The league on Friday suspended the 25-year-old Ontiveros for six games, tacked on to his one-game ban for the red card he received in the 1-1 draw on Wednesday night.

Ontiveros reportedly addressed the slur toward a Black player for the Loyal in the 71st minute.

San Diego club officials announced Friday they want to forfeit the point they earned from the draw.

"We don't even want to recognize being a part of a match where these types of actions take place," Loyal chairman Andrew Vassiliadis said in a statement. "The Loyal in our name is symbolic of the diversity in our community and as a club we will not stand for this."

Ontiveros was in his second season with LA Galaxy II. He appeared in 12 games this season and 18 games in 2019.
