His Goal Inspired The World In 2014. Watch Him Score The Worst Own Goal Of 2015.

Robin van Persie used to be good at soccer. No really, he did. That, however, seems like a long time ago, especially after the events of this past weekend. It seems he has scored what looks at first glance to be an intentional own goal, but in reality, he’s just a pitiful fool. Not sure if that’s any better.

That “intentional own goal” was an attempt to pass the ball back to his keeper using his head. Because he used his head the keeper would have been able to use his hands and pick it up, but as you can see all of that went terribly wrong, and the ball went into the back of the net.

That goal made it 3-0 and ended any hope the Dutch had of going to the 2016 European Championships in France this summer. The team had been playing badly before van Persie’s own goal. At 2-0 down there was already little chance of qualifying. But then for one of Holland’s best players to go and do that? It was too much. Cruelly, the Netherlands would score two late goals to make the game 3-2 and further torment van Persie and the nation of Holland with thoughts of what could have been.

This is all in stark contrast of the events of less than two years ago, when Robin van Persie scored this goal against Spain in the 2014 World Cup.

With that goal, van Persie reestablished himself as a world-class striker and the Netherlands as a power to be reckoned with. He was a symbol of hope back then. Now, he’s a player whose career is on a serious downward trajectory.

Before scoring that “intentional own goal,” footage surfaced of van Persie absolutely hating life at his new club, Fenerbahce. It was a sign that things were hitting rock bottom for him.

After scoring the own goal that crushed the hopes of an entire nation, he’s no longer hitting rock bottom; he’s hit it, and smushed himself all over the place.
