Aston Villa suck, and as such are in the market for a new manager who can (hopefully) make them not suck anymore. They appear to have their sights set on Huddersfield Town manager and Jurgen Klopp protege David Wagner.
The problem here is, again, Aston Villa suck, and Huddersfield Town, at least in the context of the Championship, do not suck. Huddersfield Town are in first place with 25 points. Villa are in 19th place with 10 points.
Two paragraphs from The Guardian sum the situation up pretty well.
Here's the first paragraph:
Wagner, previously part of Jürgen Klopp’s staff as the manager of Borussia Dortmund’s second team, has impressed Villa after giving Huddersfield realistic ambitions of returning to the top division for the first time since 1972.
And here's the second one:
Villa are two points off the relegation places, their only win coming against the bottom club, Rotherham, and their chances of returning to the Premier League look slim in the extreme unless there is a remarkable turnaround over the next seven months.
Why, you must be asking, would David Wagner want to trade a well-run, good team for a poorly-run, bad team?
He probably doesn't because he's a smart dude, but if he does the answer would be money. Aston Villa is a bigger club, money-wise, than Huddersfield Town, and as such can afford to pay Wagner more.
There's a flip side to the money thing though. Huddersfield are first in the Championship and therefore in line for promotion to the Premier League. If they are promoted, they can use that EPL TV money to pay Wagner more than any Championship club, including Aston Villa, can afford.
