An Offside Goal And Comical Own Goal Put Monaco 2-0 Up On Dortmund

It’s been a difficult opening 45 for Borussia Dortmund against AS Monaco in their Champions League quarterfinal first leg at the Westfalenstadion. The match, which was postponed until today after a terrorist attack on Dortmund’s team bus, has been evenly contest, but Monaco have benefitted from two refereeing decisions and a comical own goal.

In the 16th minute, Monaco were awarded a soft penalty after Socrates was judged to have fouled Kylian Mbappe in the area. Thankfully for Dortmund, Fabinho’s weak penalty drifted harmlessly wide of the post.

But only two minutes later, Thomas Lemar attacked down the left flank. Instead of shooting, he elected to play the ball across the face of goal and it deflected off Mbappe, in an offside position, and into the net.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Shinji Kagawa had good chances for Dortmund, but a comical own goal from Sven Bender has given Dortmund a mountain to climb.
