Reports: Guillermo Ochoa will not be included in Mexico’s Copa América squad list

El Tri’s legendary goalkeeper will be on sabbatical this summer.

Guillermo Ochoa to be cut from Mexico Copa América squad

According to various reports, Guillermo Ochoa will not be included in Mexico’s squad list for the Copa America this July. Club América goalkeeper, Luis Ángel Malagón, is expected to take his place in the starting XI.

This will be the first major international tournament that Ochoa is not considered for by Mexico since the 2005 Gold Cup.

Why is Ochoa not playing with Mexico in Copa América?

The decision to leave the 38-year-old out of the squad list comes after both Ochoa and Mexico national team manager Jaime Lozano ‘mutually decided’ that it would benefit both the goalkeeper and the squad to leave him out of Mexico’s summer duties.

Raúl Jiménez, Hirving Lozano and Jesús Gallardo are also rumored to not make the final list.

Mexico, who are going through a tough time rebuilding their squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup, will reportedly use these players’ absences to call up players that Lozano would consider useful in this process.

'Memo', who is to become a free agent following his two-season stint with the recently relegated Serie A club Salernitana, will use his first summer ‘free’ of international duties to prioritize spending time with his family and carefully consider all transfer offers on the table, according to reports.

The Mexican goalkeeper, who will turn 39 this summer, was recently linked to a transfer to MLS with new expansion team San Diego FC — set to make their season debut next February. Mexico teammate Chucky Lozano is also heavily rumored to sign with the club.
