Hablaliga: Game Of Thrones Edition

Hey, I'm Bryce Badwan and this is Hablaliga: Game of Thrones edition.

I just got back from touring Girona, Spain with La Liga. For those of you who don't know, it's the home of Girona FC and one of the locations where a little show called Game of Thrones is filmed.

What better way to discuss La Liga than by comparing it to the show you stole your friend’s HBO password for?

Game of Thrones is a story of rising to power and falling from grace, of death and retribution — so it’s pretty much a microcosm of La Liga.

Real Madrid owns a record 33 La Liga championships and the Merengues are the closest thing to the Lannister family we’ve seen outside of Westeros. They’re obscenely rich and hated by everyone who isn’t them. Pretty boy Jaime Lannister is basically Cristiano Ronaldo with blonde hair and good aim, Toni Kroos pulls the strings like Cersei and little Luka Modric is tremendously underrated like Tyrion.

Barcelona is the only other team that comes close to Real Madrid in La Liga history with 24 titles. Barca is just like House Targaryen, because nobody can touch the prestige and beauty of the Stormborn and their dragons in full flight. Of course, Lionel Messi is Daenerys, elegant and deadly, while Luis Suarez is a prickly dragon looking to bite anything that comes his way.

Atletico Madrid may as well be House Stark; both are always close to the top and always trying their hardest, but ultimately they don’t have the resources to compete with dragons and gold.

Athletic Bilbao represents the White Walkers — long ago a powerful force but mostly forgotten now. And Girona, was where the fictional city of Braavos was filmed. So it’s fitting they’re young and over performing like the Arya Stark, who honed her badassery on the streets of Braavos.

So, do you agree with our assessments of Hablaliga, Game of Thrones edition, or should I do a walk of shame down the streets of Girona like Cersei? Should Messi bring back his blonde hair to look more like Daenerys? Will Ronaldo lose his right foot to a band of mercenaries? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
