A video of Kylian Mbappé picking up car that delivers the game ball went viral after the little delivery mobile broke down near midfield.
Prior to France’s UEFA Nations League quarterfinal clash against Croatia on Sunday, a little Volkswagen remote controlled car arrived at midfield with the ball. Mbappé picked up the ball and then would have to pick up the car because it appeared to be out of gas… or battery.
Kylian Mbappé picking up car after it breaks down
How nice of Mbappé to offer a helping hand.
The author of this article has a concern. Am I becoming the crotchety old man that gets upset about the gimmicks added to games? Because I think the car bringing the ball before the game is nonsensical and just flat out dumb.
Imagine you’re Mbappé in this situation. All your focus is on the upcoming 90 minutes (or in Sunday’s case 120 minutes and penalties). You’re locked in, ready to go and now all of a sudden this lousy driving marketing scheme needs your assistance because it’s stuck at midfield.
What a waste of time for the players.
I’m no business major or economic genius, but does Volkswagen make any more sales because of this pre-game stunt? You’re telling me that some dingbat watching the game at home was stuck deciding which new car they wanted to buy, but seeing a shit-McNugget mobile deliver a soccer ball was the deciding factor?
I think I might just be a hater and am the problem here. There’s just something about that pointless car that gets under my skin.
France went on to win 2-0 to tie the aggregate at 2-2 and then advance on penalties 5-4. Meanwhile Volkswagen’s stock has dropped roughly 5% in the last five days and I’m going to blame it on their car breaking down in front of 80,000 fans.
