Fidel Castro is alive. At least, we think he is. At least, Diego Maradona thinks he is.
Apparently, Castro has penned a four-page letter to his old buddy Maradona to prove that he, Fidel Castro, is in fact not dead, but alive.
The 88-year-old former president of the Republic of Cuba hasn't been heard from since October, and rumors of his death have been circulating on and off since he stepped down from the Cuban presidency in 2008.
There were no photos of Castro with the letter, so this could all just be an elaborate ruse conducted by the Cuban government (Cuba's current president is Fidel's little brother Raul) to make people think Fidel is still alive. We wouldn't put it past them. Communist countries can be weird like that.
Supporting this hypothesis is the report from a Cuban TV station that Castro ended the letter with the words, “Un fuerte abrazo maestro,” which means "a strong teacher's embrace." We are not totally familiar with the customs of Cuba but this phrase strikes us as odd. We get a "trying a little to hard to be authentic" vibe from this quote, which could indicate someone other than Castro wrote the letter. Or we could be completely wrong.
According to RT.com, Maradona said the letter discusses the U.S.'s release of Cuban intelligence agents last month, a recent summit of left-leaning Latin American countries, and global oil consumption. This left us wondering how Maradona feels about these issues. We'll probably never know. Alas.
"I'm very happy to know he's well," Maradona told reporters.
