Manchester United Can Be Fixed For $150 Million According To Paul Scholes

Under the reign of Louis van Gaal, Paul Scholes has labeled Manchester United a shamble, a team devoid of creativity, risk and and an unmitigated disaster. His criticism of the current regime has been so fierce that he’s been forced to deny having a personal bias against van Gaal and the current crop of Manchester United players.

The Red Devils' latest setback, a 2-0 defeat at the hands of their fiercest rival, Liverpool, has seen Scholes renew his attacks on the club he served so well over the course of 19 professional seasons. With United struggling to keep pace with the top four in England, and seemingly eliminated from European competition after the first leg defeat to Liverpool, Scholes believes more change is now necessary.

“The club’s going the wrong way,” says Scholes. “This club should be challenging for the Premier League and Champions League. But where are they. With all the money they’ve spent, they should be challenging Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.”

Speaking to United We Stand fanzine, Scholes outlined one possible fix for Manchester United, and, here's the shocker, it involves spending a lot more money - $150 million to be exact.

Scholes believes that United lack the necessary quality in both central midfield and defense. Accordingly, Scholes believes that United should be targeting three of the world’s best players in those positions in order to obtain the quality and fight that the current side is sorely lacking.

“I’d like Luka Modric,” said Scholes. “How old is he now? Might be a bit too old, but he’s a great player. I like Raphael Varane…We probably need a centre forward but there’s not too many of them about so I’m going to say I’d like us to bring Paul Pogba back.”

Scholes wants Manchester United to return to their old philosophy of fast, physical and attacking football. With Pogba and Modric in midfield, you’d certainly be hard-pressed to find a more explosive, attacking pairing. The cost of bringing the three players to Old Trafford would make it one the biggest transfer window outlays in the history of the game.

With Manchester United currently trailing Manchester City by four points for the final Champions League spot, it’s difficult to envision players of this quality trading clubs like Real Madrid and Juventus for the Europa League with United, even if the club is under new management.
