There is Sunday League defending, and then there is Micronesian National Team defending. Their past three games against Tahiti, Fiji, and Vanuatu have had higher scores than a basketball game.
The Oceania island nation conceded 114 goals in 270 minutes of regulation time. They set a record for most goals scored against in a single match, 38, while playing Fiji this past Sunday during the Pacific Games. Even worse, the following game against Vanuatu had 46 goals go against them, but was not in contention for a record breaking score line because it did not involve the senior teams. The competition focuses on the involvement of the U-23 players while serving as a 2016 Olympic qualifying campaign as well.
Sadly, despite the thrashing Vanuatu put on Micronesia, they were still knocked out of the Pacific Games after finishing in third place. However, they will have another opportunity to play against New Zealand in the Olympic playoffs in order to secure another spot for Rio.
As for Micronesia, damage control is the only word of advice one can give after the their three matches in the Pacific Games. It will take a lot of time to recuperate and form a new game plan in the future.
