First grade is a time of personal discovery. At six years of age, it's a time when children learn simple things like raising their hands, not interrupting the speaker and respecting the feelings of others. It’s a time of collaboration, sharing and complex learning in different subject areas.
Unless your Cristiano Ronaldo Jr, whose elementary experience is, according to his father, like braving the comment section of any soccer website — the one place where you'll never find co-operation, manners and mutual respect.
The non sequitur of Lionel Messi versus Cristiano Ronaldo springs up online in articles covering the attacking philosophy of Marcelo Bielsa, so it should come as no surprise that after triumphantly finishing Peppa Pig Goes Swimming, a classmate of Cristiano Jr's will ominously lean over and whisper, “Yeah, but your dad isn’t as good as Messi.”
According to Ronaldo, “There are people who sometimes say to him ‘there is another player who is better than your father’, but he knows how to deal with that. He is a smart boy, like me. I often tell him ‘be yourself and be polite’. I know that he will go through periods of adversity as there are jealous people out there, but I see him as a happy child.”
While six year olds tend to struggle with foot-eye coordination, here’s to hoping that Cristiano Jr silences his critics out on the playground. According to his father, that skill set might be within him.
“Of course I would like it if he became a footballer. I know that it is a challenge and that it isn’t easy, but he can be whatever he wants to be as I won’t pressure him,” said Ronaldo. “I might be pushing him a little in the direction of becoming a footballer, but not to be a goalkeeper as I want him to be a forward.”
There you have it. Cristiano Jr can be anything he wants to be, apart from some goddamn goalkeeper. That would be an embarrassment on the Ronaldo name.
