Watch: Ajax and Panathinaikos set UEFA record with 34 penalty kicks in shootout

Aug. 16 (Reuters) - It took Ajax 34 penalties to beat Panathinaikos 13-12 in a marathon shootout on Thursday, setting a UEFA competition record after their Europa League third qualifying round tie ended 1-1 over two legs and extra time.

Ajax, who won 1-0 at Panathinaikos last week, conceded in the 89th minute in Amsterdam, leading to the shootout that broke the previous record of 32 attempts at the European U-21 Championship semi-final in 2007 where Netherlands beat England 13-12.

Pepe: The most underrated defender of all time?

Nowadays, there’s really no debating on whether titles and filled trophy cabinets define a player’s legacy. Of course, there are multiple players whose cabinets are filled without having played important roles in their respective teams.

Well, that’s not the case with Kepler Laveran de Lima Ferreira, Pepe.

The Brazilian-born, yes, Brazilian, is inarguably one of Portugal and Real Madrid’s greatest legends. The three-time UEFA Champions League and 2016 Euro winner is the definition of “football heritage.”

Players With The Most Champions League Titles

There are few better ways to determine the quality of a footballer than by the trophies he and his teams have won. Being crowned the best club in Europe is one of the top honors for a footballer, and dozens of players have won the European Cup or Champions League trophies three or more times. The question is, who are the players with the most Champions League titles?

Joselu attended Madrid’s last UCL final as a fan — now he’s sending them to the final

MADRID — Real Madrid striker Joselu was in dreamland after he came on in the dying moments of their Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich on Wednesday and turned the game on its head with two goals to snatch a stunning victory.

Joselu, whose journeyman career has included spells at clubs such as Hoffenheim, Eintracht Frankfurt, Hannover 96, Stoke City and Newcastle United, only touched the ball a few times in their 2-1 second-leg win, but it was a night he is likely to remember for a long time.

Offside or not? We’ll never know because the linesman raised his flag too early

Real Madrid pulled off another stunning last-minute comeback victory against Bayern Munich to win 2-1 (4-3 on aggregate) in the Champions League semifinal on Wednesday. One major talking point is a late Bayern offside call.

In the dying seconds of the game with Real Madrid leading 2-1, Bayern’s Matthijs de Ligt thought he’d netted a dramatic equalizer. He’d be denied as the linesman raised his flag for an offside call just before his goal.

We’re surprised Leroy Sané’s screamer didn’t break the net as Bayern draw Real Madrid 2-2
