USMNT Goalkeeper Zack Steffen Has All-Time Fail Vs. Liverpool In FA Cup Semifinal

American goalkeeper Zack Steffen had an all-time fail in the FA Cup semifinal vs. Liverpool to give the Reds a 2-0 lead early in the game. This is the second year in-a-row that Steffen has gotten the start in a FA Cup semifinal and made a horrible blunder. Here’s Saturday’s Steffen fail vs. Liverpool.

This is definitely Steffen’s worst error yet. At the moment he’s a goalkeeper lacking all confidence. For any Manchester City fans that don’t watch USMNT games, Steffen hasn’t been convincing for the national team either.

The other two goals that City conceded in the first half were questionable from Steffen with a lackluster effort on the first and getting beaten near-post on the third.

ESPN commentator Taylor Twellman described Steffen perfectly during the broadcast: rusty and inconsistent. The Manchester City backup goalkeeper rarely sees the field. In the past two seasons Steffen has only made 21 appearances for the club. That’s not going to cut it for the USMNT’s starting goalkeeper job.

Mistakes like the one against Liverpool and this fail against Chelsea last year aren’t helping his case for more starts.

This season Steffen has only made nine appearances and is averaging one goal conceded per game.

In my mind the only way Steffen secures the starting goalkeeper job for the U.S. in Qatar is if he goes out on loan next season and impresses.

Liverpool led Manchester City 3-0 at the time this article was written.
