The Champions League may have the world’s biggest stars, but the Europa League has the most entertaining matches, and the Europa League top scorers 2020-2021 chart bears that out.

The Europa League is UEFA’s second-tier club competition, featuring the best clubs who couldn’t qualify for the Champions League, plus a few who were knocked out of the Champions League group stages. The result is a highly entertaining tournament with none of the caginess you often find in the Champions League as teams go all-out to win the tournament for both bragging rights and entry into the next season’s Champions League.

Because of this, matches are often high-scoring affairs with end-to-end action. At the same time, clubs do not usually compete in the tournament year after year, as there is more turnover in the second-tier of Europe than at the top.

This means the Europa League top scorers 2020-2021 is a good list of who is hot right now but not necessarily a reflection of the all-time best scorers in the competition. Case in point no one has scored more in the Europa League than Henrik Larsson, who netted 31 times in 45 appearances. Radamel Falcao and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar are in second place with 30 goals, but it’s anyone’s guess when they might be in the Europa League again.

Falcao holds the record for most goals in a Europa League campaign with 17 in 2010-11 with Porto, two ahead of Jürgen Klinsmann in second place — the former USMNT coach scored 15 for Bayern Munich in 1995-96.

Because the all-time greats like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are usually in the Champions League, when looking at the Europa League top scorers 2020-2021 list, we see a tight race with a large number of players involved. This makes the Europa League Golden Boot race all the more exciting.
