The 2021 Major League Soccer season marks the 26th edition of the top division in the United States and Canada, and with the addition of Austin FC taking the league up to 27 teams, it’s the most major campaign yet. Last year, LAFC’s Diego Rossi won the Golden Boot with 14 goals, but who will finish at the top of the 2021 MLS top scorers list this season?
Rossi, who at 22 became the youngest player in MLS history to lead the league in goals scored, returns again despite attracting heavy interest from Europe, but so does his Mexican teammate Carlos Vela, who won the award in 2019 with a single-season record of 34 goals.
Another challenger is Atlanta United’s Josef Martínez, who won the Golden Boot in 2018 with 31 goals but missed last year’s campaign after tearing his ACL in the first game of the season. The 27-year-old Venezuelan is hungry to restate his claim as the league’s best finisher.
There are other fascinating storylines to follow amongst MLS forwards: Can Javier “Chicharito” Hernández get back to his best? How will Gonzalo Higuaín perform for Inter Miami in his first full season? What about Alexandre Pato with Orlando City? And Boca Juniors loanee Ramon “Wanchope” Abila with Minnesota United?
There’s no shortage of star power at the striker position throughout the league.
In terms of historic action on the all-time scoring leaders list, every goal that San Jose’s Chris Wondolowski converts increases his overall lead on Landon Donovan. The former USMNT player officially signed a one-year extension back in December and continues to defy all expectations at this point.
Other active players looking to climb the list include Kei Kamara and the Columbus Crew’s Bradley Wright-Phillips. Both of those veteran strikers are on the list of only 11 players to have scored more than 100 goals in their MLS careers.
