17-year-old Benfica youth Gedson Fernandes scored a sublime goal against Besiktas in the UEFA Youth League by cracking a volley from behind the halfway line. The elements of surprise and placement usually dictate the success of a goal from midfield, but the Portugal U-17 prospect went with sheer force in this attempt.
The UEFA Youth League consists of the U-19 teams of UEFA Champions League entrants. Benfica would go on to win this match 3-0, eliminating Besiktas from the competition in the process. The group tables for the UEFA Youth League can be found here, but it should come as no surprise that group leaders include Real Madrid, Barcelona and the famed academy of PSV Eindhoven.
