Jesus Corona Inspires Dramatic Extra Time Comeback

The Dutch Eredivisie is known for its attacking play, and this past weekend proved to be no exception. In one of the most thrilling come-from-behind wins of the season, FC Twente beat Willem II 3 to 2 Sunday.

After defender Renato Tapia was sent off with one of the softest red cards we have seen in a long time, FC Twente was down a man and a goal heading into extra time. A miracle was needed, and Jesus Corona provided the piece of play that inspired FC Twente to victory.

In the 92nd minute, Corona took down a ball lofted over the top of the defense and, with a defender on his back, he skillfully turned the corner towards goal and chipped the keeper. The effort may have been drifting just wide of the post, but teammate Andreas Bjelland left no room for doubt as he smashed Corona’s chip shot into the roof of the net.

After that piece of play, the rest of extra time was dominated by Twente, but a clutch reaction save by Willem II’s keeper in the 94th minute made it seem as though that domination would never produce an end product.

Never giving up, Twente eventually grabbed a dramatic winner through Torgeir Borven’s late strike. The FC Twente #9 was the beneficiary of a Willem II defensive error, and he found himself on the end of a pass that put him in a very dangerous position. Willem II’s defense collapsed on him, but with a couple quick touches, Borven cut inside into enough space to release a desperate shot as he fell over. The ball soared into the back of the net, leaving FC Twente ecstatic, and Willem II's heart broken.

The win pushes FC Twente’s record to 9-3-3 since making Corona a regular starter against the Go Ahead Eagles on September 13. Corona has 3 goals and 4 assists in that time.
