Things couldn’t have gone any better for Ryan Giggs in his debut as the new manager for Manchester United. In the first match since David Moyes’ sacking, United showed more pace, decisiveness and fluidity in their 4-0 victory over Norwich.
The match was mostly about Giggs, who dressed the part and enjoyed supportive chants through out the game.
"The reception was great," the 40-year-old said. "I have walked out of that tunnel so many times, but that was the best feeling I have had. I felt 10 feet tall."
It was a slow start for United. But after Danny Welbeck earned a penalty, which Rooney capitalized on, the Red Devils looked like they were finally having fun out on the pitch.
Wayne Rooney and Mata each had a pair of goals, including this strike from Rooney 3 minutes after half time.
Giggs probably isn’t in the running to become the full-time manager, but the players beamed with support after the victory.
"Giggs is a proper Manchester United boy," said Mata, "but the decision is not down to us, and we have to enjoy him being in charge."
Rooney also gave his teammate a stellar review. "He's built to be a manager. He's got all the credentials to be the next boss, but that's down to the board and him."
United denied negotiations with Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal, but sources have said there have been talks about a scheduled appointment between the two parties. Sources inside the club told ESPNFC that they want to make two high profile signings before any appointments are made.
Giggs deflected any questions about becoming the permanent manager, responding to reporters saying, “Honestly, I am only looking forward to Sunderland. I am not looking any further ahead than that.”
May 3rd is the day to which Giggs is looking, when Man U will play Sunderland. Support will only grow if he can get victories in the remaining three games of the season.
