Diego Forlan Just Reminded Us That He's Really, Really Good

Diego Forlan scored a perfect hat trick this weekend for Penarol, reminding everyone of how brilliant of player he was (and still is apparently). He scored a goal with his right foot, his left foot, one brilliant one with his head and added two assists in a 5-1 demolition of Defensor Sporting in the Uruguayan Primera Division. Check it out (Especially the last one. Header of the year for sure).

Diego Forlan has had an interesting career. He was a relative unknown when he arrived at Manchester United, and despite some flashes of brilliance, he never really kicked on in the Premier League. It famously took him 27 games to score his first goal for United.

But then he moved to Villarreal and the goals started flowing. He scored 58 goals in 121 appearances for Villarreal, but it was for Atletico Madrid that he did the most damage. The Uruguayan racked up an incredible 96 goals and 32 assists for the club in 198 appearances across all competitions.

He carried his form across to the national team as well, scoring 32 goals and 16 assists in 99 appearances. In the 2010 World Cup, he picked up the Golden Ball award after scoring five goals to help Uruguay reach the semi-finals.

After Atletico Madrid, Diego Forlan disappeared off the radar; taking in a brief stint with Cerezo Osaka in Japan before moving back to Penarol in his home country. He recently retired from international duty as Uruguay's most-capped player, but judging by that performance, we want him to give it one last hurrah in the Copa America Centenario this summer. Come on Diego. Do it.
