Did Carlos Vela Deserve Player Of The Month?

Carlos Vela just won La Liga’s Player of the Month Award for the month of November . Under normal circumstances, the award would be all well and good, and we would have no problem celebrating the night away with Vela and his legion of admirers.

Carlos Vela undoubtedly had a good November. He helped his team, Real Sociadad, to a 2-1-1 record and recorded 4 goals in the process. 3 of those goals came from a hat trick in a win against Elche, which culminated in this great effort:

That’s a classy goal. Vela is a very good player. He had a good month. Again, under normal circumstances, this all would hardly be worth a discussion. However, La Liga is not operating under normal circumstances. If anything, the circumstances are actually quite extraordinary.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have not seen a La Liga Player of the Month award between them since Ronaldo won it back in November of last year. November of last year! These are the two best players in the world we are talkiing about. If anything in this world made sense, it would be Ronaldo and Messi taking turns winning the Player of the Month award like so many children playing king of the hill.

Even during this past month, of which Vela is the "best player," Messi and Ronaldo were exceptionally more productive. For Messi, November involved scoring 8 goals as Barcelona forged its way to a 6-0-1 record. Ronaldo’s month was even better. The sure-fire winner of this year’s Ballon d’Or recorded 5 goals and seven assists as he lead Real Madrid to an undefeated 6-0-0 record.

The only conclusion that we can draw from Vela snatching the Player of the Month award away from the competition is this: La Liga won’t let itself give it to Ronaldo or Messi anymore. There is actually some logic behind this, because, even thought they play in La Liga, Ronaldo and Messi have been in a league of their own for quite a while now.

As much as this incident delegitimizes the award, La Liga Player of the Month is still something that should be held in high regard. Even if its winner is not actually better than Ronaldo or Messi during that time frame, he was still better than everyone else for a month. The rest of the league cannot say the same.

So, for all you Vela fans out there that might feel a few pesky drops of rain on your Carlos parade, be strong. You still have a lot to be happy for, and if you are ever feeling down and need a pick-me-up, we are sure there are plenty of Arsenal fans that can tell you about the glory of coming in 4th.
