Arsene Wenger's Transfer Decisions Will Shape The Premier League Season

Arsenal fans were left shocked this past Saturday as West Ham defeated the title hopefuls 2-0 in the season opener. This was supposed to be Arsenal’s season; with a strong finish last season the Gunners were expected to continue where they left off. But instead, they looked flat and lacked any real sense of urgency.

Something is missing at Arsenal, but what that is still remains a mystery. Could it be Barcelona man Sergio Busquets? On the attacking side Arsenal have quite the line-up, but on the defensive end Petr Cech is the only world-class addition in the last couple of years. His performance against West Ham on the other hand left a lot to be desired, however.

A player like Busquets is someone many Arsenal fans would agree they badly need. The only thing is the Barcelona holding midfielder isn’t going to come cheap, but in recent reports it seems less and less likely Wenger is even interested in a holding midfielder.

It’s rumored that instead of a defender, Arsene Wenger is on the lookout for a new star striker, opting out of signing Busquets altogether. He’s looking to snag PSG striker Edinson Cavani valued at £40m, over French Real Madrid front man Karim Benzema, who Arsenal were reportedly after.

But here lies one of the great choices Wenger will be forced to make, whether to go for goal scoring machine, or to bolster the defensive end with a new addition. The transfer window is closing soon and the hype is more around the midfield and forward positions.

Busquets seems to be an afterthought at this point, but if they don’t make the smart move to improve a lacking defense, Arsenal’s title hopes could be over before it even begin.
