Only 10 teams in the world are better than the USMNT according to FIFA

The United States men’s national team’s triumph in the Concacaf Nations League in March resulted in FIFA bumping the team up two spots in the world rankings to No. 11.

Wins against Jamaica and Mexico saw the USMNT move past Uruguay and Morocco in the rankings. Uruguay suffered a 2-1 defeat to Ivory Coast in March while Morocco had a surprising 0-0 draw with Mauritania.

New USMNT FIFA ranking

The USMNT spent the majority of 2023 at the No. 11 rank in the world. The last time that head coach Gregg Berhalter’s side cracked the top 10 was in August 2021.

FIFA’s world rankings are often taken with a grain of salt as the mathematics behind the system is relatively complex and for some reason Belgium is always top three in the world despite never winning any trophies.

The latest rankings suggest that the USMNT are the third best team heading into Copa América this summer sitting behind Argentina and Brazil. The18’s Copa América power rankings tell a different story as Uruguay and Colombia are arguably stronger than the U.S.

Before Copa América kicks off the USMNT will get two warmup friendlies against Colombia (June 8) and Brazil (June 12). That will be a true test to see how accurate FIFA’s rankings are about the U.S.

If you’re curious about the USMNT’s best-ever rank in FIFA’s rankings, the Stars and Stripes sat at No. 4 in world back in 2006. The worst rank in history for the U.S. was No. 36 in 2012.
