15-Year-Old Manchester United Target Alphonso Davies Thrills In Second MLS Start

The accolades for 15-year-old Vancouver Whitecaps forward/winger Alphonso Davies continue to stack up. The Liberian-born Davies, who has represented Canada at the under-20 level, became the youngest player to score a goal in USL history on May 15, 2016. In July, he became the third youngest player of all-time to sign an MLS contract. He’s appeared in eight matches for Vancouver this season, including two starts.

His first start, coming two weeks ago, made him the second-youngest starter in MLS history. On Sunday night, Davies was given his second start of the season. The hype surrounding this appearance was increased by reports that Manchester United’s scout for the Americas, Jorge Alvial, was in attendance with an eye on the left-footed playmaker.

Davies certainly didn’t disappoint. He was awarded Vancouver’s Man of the Match because of an electric first half.

Davies’ biggest moment was the drawing of a penalty in the 24th minute. His run displayed the strength, speed, balance and tenacity that’s marked him as such an exciting prospect.

Davies was unlucky not to register an assist on the night, his teammates unable to finish some fantastic service from the right-hand side.

At 15, Davies still has his entire career in front of him. For a Vancouver side that disastrously fell from second in the Western Conference in 2015 to missing the playoffs this year, he’s the one bright spot for Whitecaps supporters. News of Manchester United’s supposed interest will not be welcome in Cascadia.
