Think American Soccer Is Bad? The Best Free Kick Of The Year Came From MLS.

Orchestrated free kicks are very hard to pull off. The choreography of the runs and passes is something people are used to seeing on Sundays in the NFL, not Saturdays in MLS. Each pass, it must be said, is also yard-for-yard harder to complete, because, you know, the players are using their feet and not their hands. All this makes you understand why Real Madrid or Barcelona favor having a specialist shoot instead of running a choreographed set piece; it’s just easier to have one player have a perfect touch than have 3 or 4 players have 3 or 4 perfect touches...while making timed runs, while dealing with defenders, etc. Thankfully Real Salt Lake are not Real Madrid or Barcelona, because they just pulled off the best set piece of 2015.

As you can see, this goal won Goal of the Week when it was scored, but I think it should be up there with the very best of the year. It certainly is one of the best set piece goals I have ever seen, and I think it’s the best free kick goal of the year.
