De Bruyne Defuses Transfer Speculation, Has No Point To Prove

It’s a great time to be VfL Wolfsburg’s Kevin De Bruyne, shocking misses aside. He has just won the German Supercup for the second year running, beating Bayern Munich both times, no less. He is arguably the most sought after attacking midfielder in the world, and his play each and every week seems to only increase interest in him. He is the top dog in a very good team, and it seems that he is also aware and responsible for his actions, or at least that is what his latest words imply.

Manchester City has long been rumored to be interested in him. City manager Manuel Pellegrini has said that he could use another star player, and, in De Bruyne, stars don’t get much more promising this side of Disney.

The attacking midfielder has stayed out of the headlines amid all of the talk surrounding him, and until recently hadn’t provided the kind of teasing innuendo that fuels transfer speculation.

When reporters questioned him recently about the prospect of transferring to Manchester City, he stayed the course.

“I would not go to England just to prove that I can play there. I do not have to go to England. If I go there it’s because for me and for my family it is a good choice. That’s the key for me.”

“As a player I have never created problems and I’m not going to start. A lot of respect should come from all sides. That’s always the best solution.”

The maturity of his words are matched by their tact: he does not give any insight as to whether or not he will leave, he has simply said that he will not create “problems.” It is hard to say if these words truly bode well for Wolfsburg, or if they are a preamble to a classy separation.

In any event, De Bruyne does seem genuinely happy at Wolfsburg, and the clubs officials have publicly acknowledged their respect for him.

Things look bright and sunny for De Bruyne and Wolfsburg right now. The club will hope things will stay that way.
