Chile Hammer Mexico Out Of The Copa America

By the 60th minute, it was 5-0 to Chile, and Mexico were playing for pride.

Actually, they weren't even playing for that. They still had pride. They just didn't have anything to show for it. Chile dismantled them in the midfield in the first half for two goals and pounced on dumb mistakes in the second half.

Mexico simply weren't up to it Saturday, putting on one of those performances where you can't point the finger at any one player or decision because you have to point the finger at everyone and everything.

Chile had four goals before Mexico had a shot on goal. The match finished 7-0.

It didn't look like it would get this ugly at halftime, but then it did. Chile dominated every facet of the game early in the second half. Their skills were sharper and they clearly just wanted it more. Mexico played with the urgency of a Copa America match. Chile played with the urgency of one of those ancient native games where the losers get their heads cut off.

Mexico shouldn't feel totally embarrassed. They've had a good tournament overall and Chile are the defending champs for a reason. But, for one game, Chile were great, and Mexico were hot garbage. ANd that's what people will remember.

A stat to sum up Mexico's night: Eduardo Vargas scored twice as many goals (four!) in this game as he score for Hoffenheim this season in 24 appearances.
